As grounds were being levelled for fresh election to fill the Akwa Ibom State hilltop mansion in 2019, the Royal fathers of Oro extraction, under the aegis of Council of Oro Traditional Rulers, COTR, made up of all Paramount Rulers and Clan Heads, have received Barr Asuquo Okpo, giving him its royal blessings for success in the race.
Addressing the gathering, the COTR Chairman, HRM Ovong E. O. Isemin commended Okpo for his show of courage and determination to aspire for the governorship position of Akwa Ibom State.
Ovong Isemin, who doubles as the Paramount Ruler, Mbo Local Government Area, said Okpo should remain undaunted and resolute in his ambition and prayed that God would see him through.
Similarly, the Acting Secretary of COTR, Offong E. O. Oquong noted that the 2015 governorship agitation of Oro was a revolution, hinting that it was a great injustice for Oro not to have produced a Governor for Akwa Ibom State since its creation and that he was happy that Okpo, a true son of Oro, has demonstrated resilience by making himself available, again for the struggle.
Earlier in his remarks, Barr Asuquo Okpo said he was at the Civic Centre, to inform his fathers of his aspiration and to get their royal blessings to strengthen him in the task ahead.
Okpo, accompanied by his wife Helen, said what transpired in 2015 when he aspired for the governorship position would not deter him, hence the reason he offered himself again to govern Akwa Ibom State in 2019.
Barr Okpo who acknowledged the efforts of the Royal fathers in the 2015 race, appealed to them to keep the fire burning by enduringly leading delegations to dialogue with royal fathers from Ibibio and Annang ethnic groups on the need for Oro man to be given a chance to serve the state as governor.
Also speaking, an Elder statesman of the All Progressives Congress in the State, Elder Enefiok Ekefre stressed the need for Akwa Ibom people, especially those from Ibibio and Annang to speak the truth by supporting an Oro man to be the next governor of the State, adding that injustice had no ethnic nationality.
The event which featured sober reflection and prayers by the royal fathers on Barr Asuquo Okpo, had in attendance, the Paramount Ruler of Oron Local Government Area, HRM Offong Odiong Akan; that of Urue Offong/Oruko, Offong E. R. Amasi; Udung Uko, Offong Bassey Etim Edet and the President-General of Oron Union, Dr Effiong Edunam.
Others were the former Nigerian ambassador to Greece, His Excellency Etim Uye, Ikpoto Oro; Clan Head of Okpo in Urue Offong/Oruko Local Government Area, His Highness, Offong E. M. Unanaowo, among other clan heads and title holders of Oro Nation.
