Volunteers, men and officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps across Akwa Ibom State today, October 26, 2019, gathered at the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, in Uyo for this year’s Special Marshal Sectorial Workshop, with the theme: “The Special Marshals, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”.
Declaring the session open, Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, noted that out of the eighteen thousand Special Marshals nationwide, Akwa Ibom State has three hundred and forty nine individuals sacrificing their time and resources to improve road safety in the country.
Oyeyemi, who was represented by Assistant Corps Marshal, Kingsley Agomoh, thanked the state government for supporting the FRSC in the discharge of its duty, adding that the timing of the workshop is apt as traffic on roads will increase during the “ember months” festivities.
In his remarks, Akwa Ibom State FRSC Sector Commander, Sunday Oghenekaro, explained that the annual event is aimed at enabling stock-taking and assessment of the performance of Special Marshals who have offered to served humanity through their road safety and traffic management efforts, as well as proffer solutions that will enable the Corps achieve it’s zero crash goal.
Oghenekaro reminded the participants that road crashes have been responsible for preventable deaths, and called for all hands to be on deck to contain the epidemic, warning that if not tamed, it may become the number one leading cause of deaths worldwide.
High point of the event was the induction of the Cheif Judge, Justice Godwin Abraham, Head of Service, Elder Effiong Essien, Political Leader of Nsit Ubium, Senator Effiong Dickson Bob and Commissioner for Works, Ephraim Inyangeyen, as Special Marshals of the FRSC by the Assistant Corps Marshal, Kingsley Agomoh and the State FRSC Sector Commander, Sunday Oghenekaro.
