Insecurity: Retired DSS Officer Protests Appointment of “Notorious Foreign” Retired Officers Who Served in A’Ibom State As Security Aides

Gov. Udom Emmanuel

A retired Directorate of State Security (DSS) officer from Akwa Ibom state has petitioned the Akwa Ibom state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, on what he sees as the penchant to return top security officers, who had previously served in the state to manage the state government security affairs.

The officer, whose name has been removed at his instance for security reasons, said that the trend was not healthy bearing in mind that many of them worked in the state at the darkest Security hours of the state.

The distraught officer pointed out, with outrage, the recent appointment of Mr Fubara Duke, a former Deputy Director of SSS in the state incharge of operations, as a Special Assistant to the governor on security matters, as one of the disturbing security moves of the Udom administration. He noted that the appointment of Mr Duke, had followed the same manner Mr Gabriel Achong was appointed immediately after the assumption of office of the governor after the 2015 governorship election characterized by massive deaths of innocent voters in Akwa Ibom state.

In the Retired Officer’s words, “I write to register my complaint and the complaints of many other retired DSS personnel from Akwa Ibom state about your appointment of Mr Fubara Duke as your new SA Security. We have watched with concern that you have been appointing none indigenes to this sensitive post since you took over. Before Fubara, you appointed CP retired Gabriel Achong. The Akwa Ibom SA Security Governor Akpabio handed over to you, Capt Ekong you have changed his post to one meaningless post and rendered the man idle, useless and helpless.”

Continuing he wrote, “We have noticed that Fubara has started work. We found out that last week he brought Mr. Toma Minti, former State Director and Shola that used to be in Akwa Ibom before, to meet with you to plan security for your 2nd term election. We found out that you all agreed at the meeting to work for Shola to be posted back to Akwa Ibom from Lagos where he is Assistant director operations.

“Your Excellency, why bring back Shola that worked with Fubara and Minti to cover up many of the political killings of the last administration. Why? What special interests do you have in Fubara and Shola. We hope political killings won’t start again.

“Excellency, there are many retired but not tired service personnel from Akwa Ibom. Why not appoint any of them instead of another foreigner. Or why can’t you allow Capt Ekong to do the work. How has he offended you!”

The Security expert, who pride himself to have “served in Kogi, Anambra, Taraba, Yobe and headquarters, Abuja” in his service career, noted that he had tried reaching the governor through other means unsuccessfully, appealed to Governor Emmanuel to “cancel Fubara’s appointment and stop working for Shola’s return”, noting that, “If you don’t, we may have no choice but to petition Mr President and DG SSS. We don’t want bloodshed in Akwa Ibom again. We won’t be afraid to appear in person to defend our petition. It’s not too late for you”.
