The Nigeria Bar Association, Uyo Branch has concluded all arrangements to monitor tomorrow’s Presidential and National Assembly election in Akwa Ibom State. Addressing members of the branch at the February 2019 General Meeting of the Bar at the Hon Justice Otu Bar Center Uyo, chairman of the branch, Eno-Obong Akpan Esq, stated that the branch observer delegates were selected as part of the 662 Nigerian Bar Association observer team accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission, for the election.
The Chairman noted that the Nigerian Bar Association and its President, Mr. Paul Usoro, (SAN) were committed to a peaceful, credible, fair and free election. She noted that the election would afford Nigerians the opportunity to elect those they can trust to deliver development and positively affect their lives as citizens.
She advised those in the observer team to ensure that they get hold of, and study the NBA code of conduct on election observation and the relevant INEC regulations to ensure that they observe within the ambits of the law.
“I urge all those nominated and accredited as observers to ensure that they manifest the discipline and decorum expected of lawyers as they carry out this important national assignment on behalf of our association. We are for a credible, fair and free elections. We must be seen as objective and unbiased observers,” the branch chairman admonished.
To politicians and other stakeholders in the electoral process, Akpan charged them not to see elections as war, but a peaceful means of recruiting leadership at various levels of government. He tasked them to eschew violence, rancour and acrimony as election would come and go, but the state and the nation would remain.
“I urge our politicians and other critical stakeholders in the process to see this election as a mere contest of who should lead at this time. If it is not your time today, tomorrow may be yours. To all NBA observers, I say please be safety conscious and perform your duties with an open mind,” she advised.
