Negligent Discharge: ‘Drunk’ Civil Defence Officer Allegedly Hits Teenager in Uyo


A negligent discharge has accured of an officer of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, hitting a teenager in Uyo, with many scampering for safety.

The victim is one Veronica Kufre said to be about 15 years old.

The discharge is said to have happened on Friday, during a traditional marriage ceremony of a couple simply identified as Uduak and Samuel.

The event held at Nsukara along Nwaniba Road, shortly after the University of Uyo permanent site.

According to an eyewitness, two officers of the Civil Defence Corps probably hired to maintain peace and security at the event, had allegedly gathered with members of the public drinking beer in merriment.

Unfortunately, the fireman was still in his hands when the discharge occured.

Newstrack learnt that the cop managed to point the firearm to the ground but that a bullet slipped off hitting the girl who dropped down bleeding profusely.

While the victim was being rushed to the hospital, we learnt that youths of the area may have been ready to take laws into their hands when suddenly a police van drove in to obtain the two officers.

Veronica Kufre, we gathered, was admitted at Life Care Clinic, in Uyo after three hospitals, previously reached had reportedly declined admitting her.

Our correspondent learnt that the victim was responding as doctors immediately swung into action to save her life.

Speaking to Newstrack on Saturday morning, the Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command, Odiko MacDon, SP, said the Command was yet receive the report.
