Road projects worth over #400 million have been commissioned in various parts of Enugu State by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Peace Mass Transit Ltd, Chief Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi.
Chief Onyishi told newsmen in his Amukwa country home in Nsukka that the amount was the cumulative cost of various road projects he had undertaken in parts of Nsukka and Emene, Enugu, the seat of PMT.
He spoke shortly after the inauguration of the Amukwa – UNN two kilometer road single handedly executed by him as part of the corporate social responsibility of his business conglomerate.
Enugu State Governor Lawrence Ugwuanyi, performed the unveiling.
Chief Onyishi, a renowned philanthropist with various multi – million naira projects spread across Nigeria, particularly the south-east, said he would continue to give back to the society as demonstration of his appreciation of God’s abundant favour over the years.
“I thank the Governor for finding time to attend this assignment at short notice, as I present this gift to Enugu State, Nsukka land and to my alma-mata-the university of Nigeria Nsukka”, Onyishi told Governor Ugwuany.
The PMT boss was also profuse in his appreciation of the University as agent of civilization and development in Nsukka since its inception.
“It was the #1,200.00 paid to my family as cash crop compensation with which I started my first business, second hand cloth (okirika) business in 1985, that seed money is the reason we are here today, Onyishi revealed.
“By the special Grace of God we are here today to witness the commissioning of the fully constructed, about 2 kilometer road, with twin drainages, spanning Enugu road through Orba road, to the South Gate of the UNN”, he said.
In the course of the reconstruction of the road, he said, folks willingly gave permission for the demolition of fences for needed expansion; a gesture he disclosed followed his undertaken to reconstruct all such fences so affected.
“All those whose fences were tampered with, I promise to repair completely”, he restated.
The Emene road under construction, Chief Onyishi disclosed, would be delivered in about three months’ time. It is about 600 meters in length, stretching from the main airport road across to the old Emene road.
Chief Onyishi also disclosed at the occasion that the cottage hospital which he built and donated to his people on the occasion of his 50th birthday anniversary four years ago would be run by community union, henceforth.
“I believe that, after four years, the hospital should be able to fund itself”, he reasoned.
Governor Ugwuanyi commended Dr. Onyishi for his numerous philanthropic projects across the state, and his general disposition to giving back to the society, while urging other Enugu well- to- do citizens to emulate him.
The Governor acknowledged the road as Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi Road as named by the Local Government about 15 years ago.
“Government alone cannot do it; we need people like Dr. Onyishi to help us”, the Governor said.
