Protests Against NDDC Boss: Oku Ibom Ibibio, Akwa Ibom Royal Fathers Step-in

Discordant tunes trailing the recent appointment of sole administrator for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in the person of Mr Effiong Akwa has attracted royal attention, as monarchs of Akwa Ibom State have stepped into the matter.

The Supreme Monarch of Ibibio land, Oku Ibom Ibibio and Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs, His Eminence Ntenyin (Dr) Solomon Etuk has called on youth groups of the Niger Delta, especially the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and their affiliates to sheath their swords and give peace a chance.

In a press statement endorsed by the Royal Father on behalf of the 31 Paramount Rulers in the state, Solomon Etuk said the protests by agitated youths and groups were ill-informed, unhealthy, and depicts bad faith, against a fellow Niger Deltan from Akwa Ibom State.

Ntenyin Solomon Etuk who viewed the action as “illogical, selfish and uncalled for”, even as it was an “uncharitable display of distrust, condemned it in its entirety.”

HRM observed that with sound background, the NDDC Interim Administrator, Barr. Effiong Okon Akwa was “firmly rooted to oversee the affairs of NDDC till the end of the ongoing forensic auditing.”

“It can be seen that Barr. Effiong Okon Akwa possesses cognate experience backed with academic, administrative, managerial and professional expertise to deliver on the mandate set by the Presidency.”

The statement advised Niger Delta youths to be “mindful of our region’s corporate interests and welfare by allowing the thread of brotherhood to permeate.”

For the records, Akwa Ibom is the leading oil producing state in Nigeria with 504, 000 barrels of crude oil production daily, topping the chart with 31.4 % against eight (8) other states in the Niger Delta of Nigeria.

“Such sense of entitlement can threaten the unity, security and development of our depraved region, despite being the nation’s bastion of oil and gas wealth.

“We make a passionate appeal to our royal colleagues across the states and our established platforms – the South-South Monarchs’ Forum and the Association of Traditional Rulers of Oil Mineral Producing Communities of Nigeria (TROMPCON) to offer counsel to our youths and political leaders not to overheat the polity.

“We therefore commend President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR for the bold steps taken in this direction and for appointing our son, who is a capable hand towards fixing the NDDC.

“We equally appeal to the Federal Government through the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to complete the East West Road, effect the construction of the Calabar-Itu-Ikot Ekpene Highway, the Ogoni Clean Up exercise, the railway project for Niger Delta region and other key projects earmarked to accelerate development in the region, being the goose that lays the golden eggs for the nation”, he said.
