AKSU Holds Two-Day Workshop for SU Excos, Parliamentarians

Management of the Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, through the Office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nse U. Essien has organized a two-day leadership and capacity building workshop for the newly elected members of the Students Union executive and its members of parliament.

The workshop was held in collaboration with Ideal Consortium, between Thursday and Friday, September 23rd and 24th at the University Auditorium, Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin LGA with the theme, “The Contemporary Students’ Union: Solving the Problem Without Breaching Peace”.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the event on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Nse Essien stated that the capacity building workshop was imperative in enhancing the operations and activities of the Students Union, as well as the Students’ Parliament.

The Vice Chancellor noted that students unionism was not about violence, strife or resistance, but effective representation of the students, especially in positively influencing Management’s policies through logical presentation of ideas and dialogue.

Prof. Nse Essien who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof Umoren Umoren, welcomed all participants and resource persons, while also congratulating new parliamentarians who emerged at the event.

Speakers at the event included Prof Effiong Johnson, University Orator, University of Uyo and professor of Theatre Arts, himself a former Dean, Students Affairs of UniUyo; and Rt Hon (Elder) Sam Ikon who is the former Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and the immediate past Member representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency.

Speaking extempore and generally on the theme of the workshop, Prof Effiong Johnson coached the Students Union Executives on how to utilize the power of negotiation in marshalling out their demands.

Prof Johnson enjoined participants not to see the opportunity as only about their activities in the school, but as a forum to set the pace for their future endeavours.

On his part, the former Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sam Ikon who spoke on the topic, “The Ethics and Ethos of a Progressive Legislature”, took time to coach participants on the art of lawmaking.

He advised students to follow the steps in students political education, participation and activism, especially as those who were sure to become leaders of tomorrow.

However, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Monday E. Dickson who dedicated time to advising the students on their life’s journey, thanked the resource persons for coming in persons to interact with the participants at the event.

In his vote of thanks, the Facilitator of Ideal Consortium, Comrade John Bassey thanked God for the enablement of putting the event together.

John Bassey, himself the pioneer Secretary of the Students Union and pioneer Alumni President of the University, appreciated the Institution’s Vice Chancellor, the resource persons and all staffers and participants who made the event a reality.

The workshop was attended by 42 parliamentarians, 11 Student’s Union excutive members, a Clerk of the Student’s Union House of Representatives, making up 54 participants.

Highpoint of the event was the election of Principal Officers of the Students’ Parliament including Vincent Effiong Jonah as Speaker; Emmanuel Christopher Edem as Deputy Speaker and Emmanuel Vincent as the Chief Whip.
