Buhari set to pronounce Martime varsity in Oron – says Nelson Effiong

…By Joseph Atainyang

In line with the bill passed by the Nigerian Senate for the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron to be upgraded to the Federal University of Maritime Studies, Oron (FUMSO), Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari will soon release an executive order pronouncing the lift of the institution to a university status.

The federal government has consequently begun a process of appointing a vice chancellor to head the proposed university as three prominent scholars in the Maritime industry, including an Oro-born Akwa Ibom son, are currently being screened by government officials for the top job.

The Senator representing Akwa Ibom South senatorial district, Senator Nelson Effiong gave the information Wednesday while addressing the Paramount Ruler of Urue Offong/Oruko, HM Engr Effiong Robin Amasi, together with his traditional council, as well as rallies within the area and Mkpat Enin local government area respectively.

Nelson Effiong who recalled having sponsored the FUMSO bill which was passed in 2017, however regretted the inability of his brother at the House of Representatives to give life to the same bill for easier concurrent and subsequent assent by the President.

He explained that having been a parliamentarian all his life, he has sponsored well over eight bills at the Senate on different sociopolitical and economic relevance of his constituents.

Telling the Royal Father and all his constituents to keep faith by returning him to the Senate, as he has worked hard to gain recognition red chambers which gives advantage over freshers, the Senator, who reminded them that he has never lost any election, solicited their blessing so he can sit with President Buhari to better the lives of his people.

His words, “I have been the pioneer chief whip of the premiere Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. I have been a speaker of the Parliament. I have worked hard to raise Eket Senatorial District as the largest oil producing area in the whole country. So, I’ll go back to the Senate and serve you all.

“I did all I could to make sure the 40 years old Maritime Academy becomes a maritime university. But because I left the PDP, Governor Udom Emmanuel stopped the progress of the FUMSO Bill. The President will pronounce the Academy a university. Three persons have been invited for interview and one of them is from Oron. A fortunate person shall be appointed the pioneer vice chancellor of the Maritime University.

“The President has also given positive instructions regarding the Ibaka Deep Seaport where I am working directly with the Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi to put in place. Arrangements have been concluded for the Seaport to start off and the rumoured relocation will not manifest as the federal government has seriously frowned at it”, he concluded.

In his prayers, the Paramount Ruler of Urue Offong Oruko, Chief Effiong Robin Amasi reasoned that the world, having not been a home to humanity is a place where people should work with people and through people, using minimum strain to achieve maximum progress.

While encouraging Senator Nelson to redouble his effort so as to achieve maximum results at the Senate, the Royal Father who expressed satisfaction towards the Senator’s achievements at the time being, prayed for his success at the polls.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Council of Oro Traditional Rulers (COTR), HH Offong Effiong Unanaowo, together with his Secretary, HH Effiong Oquong who is also the Village Head of Edok highlighted the needs of Oro Nation and those of the Eket Senatorial District.

The duo who stressed the needs for the creation of FUMSO, Ibaka Deep Seaport and the completion of Section Five of the East West Road, saying that Senator Nelson is due for blessing to return to the Senate and fast track implementation of the programmes he has laboured for.

Meanwhile, party faithful both at Mkpat Enin and Urue Offong Oruko local government areas spoke of the need to return Senator Nelson Effiong, so they can reap the dividends of democracy from the ruling party, where the Senator belongs.

Notable figures in the campaign train were the 2015 deputy governorship candidate of the APC, Engr Benedict Ukpong, Ikpoto Oro; the Director General of the Team Destiny Campaign Organization, Dr Edet Atti; former candidate of the APC, Dr (Mrs) Umo Amba Ekanem; spokesperson of the team, Barr Effiong Oquong, and many others.
