Chief Arthur Obi Okafor SAN, has joined the ranks of Nigerians calling for the total reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigerian Police. Chief Okafor had in a recent twit on his twitter handle, @ArthurObiOkafor, raised his voice against the recurrent abuse of human rights by that arm of the police force.
Chief Okafor, who only two months ago hosted the Nigerian Bar Association Administration of Criminal Justice summit, said that “The Nigerian Bar Association through its leaders are calling for serious reforms of our Police”, adding that “We need to check and stop the abuse of Human Rights by the different branches of the police.”
He noted that the campaign for #EndSARS, was a “wake up call that the citizens have had enough”.
Under the NBA committee on Criminal Justice Reform, the learned silk and his team have continued to work towards the domestication of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act of 2015 in the 36 states of the federation.
He has been a firm advocate for a more humane and efficient criminal justice administration system that would ensure justice for all concerned. Through the stringent advocacy of his committee, more and more states are getting the 2015 ACJA domesticated.
The #EndSARS campaign has been a strong media campaign by civil society activists and rights campaigners towards an end to the brutality of the Special Anti Robbery Squad of the Nigerian Police, in its performance of its security duties.
The campaign has so far recorded appreciable result with the Inspector General of Police, acknowledging the need for a total Reform of the department towards a better and more humane method of crime fighting. This acknowledgement was followed by the launching of the #ReformPoliceNG by the police authorities.
