It was pomp and pageantry when members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Udung Uko local government area of Akwa Ibom State, gathered to receive their son and daughter, the retired administrative secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Rivers and Edo states, Elder Etim Umoh and wife, Hon (Mrs) Mfonobong Umoh.
Celebrating the couple at the Government Primary School, Ekim, Ward 10 on Friday, the people praised the “ingenious character” of Elder Etim Umoh whom they described as a pride to Udung Uko LGA, Òròn Nation, as well as the entire Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking during the event, the executive chairman of Udung Uko LGA, Hon. Atanang Osung gave a long list of the fortunes Elder Umoh has brought to his people and to him in person.
He called for continued love, cooperation and support to solidify Elder Umoh’s good conscience, resourcefulness and the zeal to render selfless service for his people.
“My life history cannot be complete without the mention of this Elder statesman. He is my friend, my brother, my mentor and my benefactor. Without him, it would be out of question for me to be here presiding over the affairs of this area as a council chairman.
“He is a special creation, a unique gentleman, soft in speech, deep in thought and with clean conscience.
“His unstained service record is a testament to the enormous blessing of God upon us. This is why we must solidify our love and support for him”, he said.
Also speaking, the State Officer of the PDP, Hon. Godwin Okponung admitted that Elder Umoh was exceptional in his approach to life and has done a lot to strengthen the bond of love and unity in Udung Uko LGA.
Mr Okponung maintained that Elder Umoh’s effort in attracting development to the area, was why stakeholders thought it wise to reward him and family with the position of the council’s vice chairman duly given to his wife.
Okponung stressed, that same love, cooperation and selflessness was required from every stakeholder of the party in the area, to strengthen their hands in decisively voting in support of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s succession plan, as a reward for the road which he said the governor has built for them.
Meanwhile, the former council chairman of the area, Dr Asuquo Anwana Esq stated that if there was nothing good happening in the area, there won’t be any reason for celebration.
While describing Elder Etim Umoh as a pleasant thing happening to Udung Uko, which was why they were happy, Chief Anwana thanked the former INEC boss for giving good account of himself and being the source of their happiness.
For the chairman Engr Effiong Idung who is the chairman, Udung Uko PDP Elders’ Council, Etim Umoh had been a gentleman of dignity and nobility, known for his character even as a classroom teacher.
However, a retired permanent secretary in Akwa Ibom State Civil Service, Barr (Mrs) Mary Ewa commended Elder Umoh and wife for their consistent leadership excellence.
While the SA to the Governor on Project Monitoring, Ulap (Chief) Asukwo Enweme also known as Levile noted that it was pleasant to have Elder Umoh begin the Christmas celebration on the third of December, the Akankang Ubodung, Elder Okon Umoh (Umoh- Okpi) stated that the Guest of Honour was a big fish and an asset to the party.
Earlier in their remarks, both the ward chairman, Mr Effiong Emmanuel, and the chapter chairman, Hon. John Onukak thanked the participants for coming to share in their joy, and assured that they would continue to support Elder Umoh in his visionary leadership.
In his remark, the Guest of Honour and retired INEC Administrative Secretary, Elder Etim Umoh who was flanked by his wife, Hon Mrs Mfonobong Umoh expressed delight over the huge reception accorded them.
Elder Umoh who earlier registered with PDP upon his retirement from service, had this to say, “I have served meritoriously and like they say in my office, I have finished strong and left honourably. I am delighted to see this huge reception done me today.
“I thank the PDP family that has graciously given my wife the opportunity to serve as the Vice Chairman.
“It is also on record that this road from Udung Uko to our village has been done by our action-soaked governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel.
“I cannot thank you enough for the love, support, prayers which is why God has been faithful to me in all these years”.
The event was attended by all chapter and wards officials of the PDP, their contemporary in neighbouring Oro LGAs and notable personalities from all walks of life across political divide.
