The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Urue Offong Oruko local government area of Akwa Ibom State has dispelled rumours making the rounds that a consensus candidate has been selected for the Chairmanship position in the forth coming elections.

This is even as stakeholders have also stressed that no female candidate shall be fielded for the position.

In a press statement dated Sunday, August 16, 2020 and endorsed by the Chapter Chairman of the Party, Hon. Okpo Edeke, the party stated that apart from the stakeholders meeting held twice in Venus Hotels, Shelter Afrique, Uyo, on July 26 and August 11, 2020, and then at the early hours of August 12, 2020, at the residence of His Excellency Amb. Etim Okpoyo, any other such gathering was a nullity.

Accordingly, the party recalled that the last stakeholders meeting of August 12 at the residence of HE Amb. Etim Okpoyo had “unanimously rejected the attempt by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem to impose a female Chairmanship Aspirant, Hon. Mrs Precious Selong on the stakeholders.

“It was at the meeting that the stakeholders unanimously rejected the attempt made by the SSG, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem to impose a female Chairmanship Aspirant in the person of Hon. Mrs Precious Selong on the stakeholders of Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Area as a consensus candidate.

“The stakeholders at the meeting also resolved to select a male Chairmanship Candidate for the local government area through the normal electioneering processes, but not through a consensus”, the statement said.

The party condemned a situation where few disgruntled elements came up with a consensus story of the same person whom the stakeholders had rejected, describing the exercise as an “affront by returnees of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement which asked the general public to discountenance the ‘fake news’ equally warned “perpetrators of the heinous act to refrain from such mundane action”, stressing that the party was “prepared to sanctioning those who want to cause further infractions or undermine its leadership, no matter how highly placed.”

The statement read in parts, “It is absurd to note the desperation, recklessness, blatant lies, falsification, misdemeanour and disrespect exhibited by the supporters of Hon. Mrs Precious Selong against the position already taken by the stakeholders on the matter.

“It is also an act of affront by APC returnees like Hon. Dr. Esio Okwong Udoh and Hon. Okon Tom Osung who left the PDP and worked against the reelection of His Excellency Mr Udom Gabriel Emmanuel during the 2019 general elections.”
